Each festival, Lyon holds piping and drumming competitions in which individuals from all across the United States compete for contest grades and medals. Competitions are not sanctioned for 2019.

Celtic poetry

The Arkansas Scottish Festival will once again sponsor a poetry contest.  There is no fee to enter.  Poems may be any style, and any length, but must have a Celtic (Scottish, Irish, Welsh, Briton, Galician, etc.) theme or traditional form. Entries will be judged this year by last year's contest winner, Ricky Pittman. The winning poem will be read (by the author if possible) during the Celtic Concert on Thursday night of the festival.  The author need not be present at the festival to win.

The Kilted Mile


The race will take place on Main Street in Downtown Batesville on Friday, April 3rd beginning at 6 p.m., and runners will line up at 12th and Main. Registration will begin at 5 p.m. at Natural State Running on 148 E. Main Street. In both men and women's categories, the cash awards will be $100 (first place), $50 (second place), and $25 (third place).

For $15, participants not only join the race but also receive a kilt to wear while they run!

If it's raining at 6 the race will go on!  If there are thunder and lightning, we will wait in Landers Theater until the storm passes to race. If the storm has not passed by 7 p.m., we will reschedule the Kilted Mile for Saturday around the same time.

Golf scramble

Kick off the Arkansas Scottish Festival with a 4-Man Golf Scramble on Friday, April 3rd at The Course at Eagle Mountain on 800 Gap Road in Batesville. Prizes will be awarded to the top two teams and first, second, and third closest to the pin. It is $450 per team or $125 per player. Entry includes lunch, beer, and soft drinks, and all proceeds benefit the Lyon College men’s and women’s golf teams and the Lyon College Scottish Heritage Program. Test your strength with this year’s tug-of-war contest! This event is free and open to all. Teams are limited to 8 participants with 6 pulling at one time. The contest will start at 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 4 on Couch Garden. Sign up here.
